WELCOME

In brain scans, music lights up the medial prefrontal cortex and triggers a memory that starts playing in your mind. All of a sudden you can see a place, a person, an incident. The strongest responses to music— the ones that elicit vivid memories— cause the greatest activity on brain scans. It’s for this reason that stroke patients can access lyrics before they remember language, why Alzheimer’s patients can still remember songs from their youth.

Llama looking over Machu Picchu.

Covered by an everlasting blanket of fog, steep mountainsides hide a mysterious and unknown world, a land that is eternally green and where humidity is the lynchpin of this intricate natural machine. Here, rivers pick up speed as they thunder down the slopes on their eastward trek, tearing away sediment from the mountains as they hurry down. It is the realm of crystalline waterfalls and animals as lovely as they are elusive, and the setting the Incas chose to build the Sacred City of Machu Picchu.

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” - Mark 8:35-37 (KJV)

This is the story of my life so far.

Amen.
